Engines old dynamics new
What about the powertrains of the new Honda CR-V? Two out of three are familiar to us. This is a 2.4-liter Earth Dreams gasoline engine that develops 188 hp. with., and a two-liter 150-horsepower engine. For the American market (yes, even if it is unusual), a 1.5-liter 190-horsepower turbocharged gasoline engine has also been developed.
The 2.4-liter CR-V was the first to appear on the Russian market, but we got one of the first two-liter cars for the test. With similar equipment (transmission – CVT, all-wheel drive), such a crossover will cost about 1.85 – 2.18 million rubles, more powerful – 400-500 thousand rubles more expensive. The surcharge for the color “metallic” is 18,000 rubles, for “mother-of-pearl” – 25,000 rubles.
To say that a two-liter car does not “drive” at all is to sin against the truth. Rides, and very cheerfully. Although the passport consumption from zero to hundreds, perhaps, is not impressive: almost 12 seconds. But in practice, the crossover is perceived as very dynamic. It’s a Honda!
Having mastered driving, I note large mirrors. Interestingly, the built-in camera is visible only in the body of the right mirror. It is activated every time you change lanes, every time you turn right, and it’s convenient. We appreciated this option even during the presentation of the ninth “Accord”. And so, we waited for her appearance on the CR-V. I will add that the cameras while driving can be instantly activated using the button at the end of the left stalk switch.
If the function of turning on the cameras was “hardwired” in the menu of the multimedia system, I would immediately spit on it and forget it. Because the menu is very complicated and confusing. So, it is not immediately possible to find the tuning of radio stations, which, it would seem, should be somewhere on the surface. Yandex maps are active only when the connected smartphone is connected to the Internet. It seems to be logical, but … it was impossible to get by with a simple navigator?
In general, on-board electronics are not happy, which cannot be said about the mechanics. What a sharp and precise steering wheel! It only takes 2.2 turns from lock to lock and delivers a pleasant push. Such a convenient and informative mechanism is extremely rare. I also like the brakes, grabbing, it seems, softly, but tenaciously, it is easy to dose the effort on the pedals.
And, of course, you immediately notice a greatly increased level of comfort. Noise isolation is a plus. Smoothness is also a plus. Suspension skillfully balances on the verge of stiffness and comfort. Large irregularities, like speed bumps, are best overcome with reverence, but you can forget about small ones. Credit for the new low friction dampers?
The suspension of the Honda CR-V has the following scheme: MacPherson strut in front, multi-link in the back. Anti-roll bars are used front and rear, as well as shock absorbers with reduced internal friction. One of the innovations is that the rear shock absorbers are now installed separately from the springs, and do not pass through them, as before. For cars intended for sale in Russia, the suspension is specially “clamped”, for the American versions of the crossover it is softer.
The CVT on the CR-V is a rare beast. It is equipped with a torque converter to soften the shocks when changing gears. It’s as if the CVTs usually “push” … Usually they don’t, but the “Honda”, despite the presence of a torque converter, has such a habit. Particularly noticeable are the body movements of parts inside the unit in normal mode, in eco-friendly and sports they are less, the switching is smooth. But, of course, when accelerating in ECO mode, the “gas” pedal in the first moments does not cause almost any motor response. Then acceleration begins, which, in general, cannot be reproached for being too environmentally friendly. Dynamics is quite tolerable. Although not the same as in D and even more so S modes. It’s just that if you forget to press the “green” button again and turn off the symbol in the form of a tree on the tidy, you may not immediately find that you are accelerating more slowly.
So, we move around the city cheerfully, dynamically, confidently rush into turns, and if necessary or desired, we sharply change lanes. The mirrors are large, comfortable, but there is no blind spot control system, not only on the two-liter version, but also on the 2.4-liter one. This is for Russia, on the CR-V – “American” this function is. And overseas buyers will be pleased with such “gadgets” as a lane control system and an adaptive “cruise”. In our market there will be no cars with these options yet. And still, the updated crossover is sincerely pleasing.
On the track, he admires the smoothness, downright nobility of the course and high directional stability. Although, it seems, there is a reason to rummage around. The asphalt is partly snowy, partly frozen, and the tires are not studded. Pay attention to the black and silver wheels – they are full-time, this is not tuning. Actually, this is the answer to the question of a married couple who saw the new CR-V in the parking lot near my house.
There is silence in the cabin, even at speeds of 130-140 km / h we are talking with the front passenger without raising our voices. It is a pity that there is no one to sit behind – however, a puppy is traveling there in a container, and, by the way, he also does not complain about the lack of comfort, that is, he does not squeak. It even wobbles a little.
Economy Honda is not striking. After several kilometers along the Moscow Ring Road and a suburban highway at speeds up to 110 km / h, gasoline consumption (92nd, by the way!) barely exceeded 8 liters per 100 km. Approximately the same level of consumption was maintained using cruise control, setting the same speed mark. But it was worth literally breaking away on a free highway far from the capital, as the consumption jumped by almost a liter, and by the end of the six-hour trip it was already 9.1 liters per 100 km. But, let’s agree, it will be frankly boring to drive slowly and sadly on this crossover.
Forays into light off-road conditions added another 0.3-0.4 liters per hundred to the consumption, but I must say, I didn’t really torment the crossover there. Only slightly. In the city, especially in traffic jams, you should count on at least 12 or even 13-liter appetite. So in this case it will be possible to save only on the price of 92nd gasoline.
